Sal Island

Sal is the Island with the most internal infrastructure of all the Cape Verde Islands. Although some roads are built from the traditional black volcanic rock - making a ride similar to going over the Paris Roubais cobbles - there is a 4 lane highway running from Santa Maria to Espargos and a 2 lane road from Espargos to Palmeira. All of these are well tarmac'd with few potholes.

Below is an overview map of Sal and you can see that it's a fairly barren landscape. To give you a feel for the island we have done a few "Helmet Cam" rides from place to place on the island. These are the main roads you're likely to want to ride on a racing bike, all other routes needing a mountain bike + additional off road skills.
